Williston to vote on school bond issue next week

Voters in Williston on Tuesday will be asked to approve a $55 million school bond issue.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — Voters in Williston on Tuesday will be asked to approve a $55 million school bond issue.

Superintendent Viola LaFontaine tells the Minot Daily News that taxes would go up about $370 per year for every $100,000 of a home's value.

LaFontaine says the money would pay for needed school construction and renovations for the rapidly expanding school district. She says that Williston has added about 600 students in the past four years, and most of the growth is at the elementary level.

If the bond issue passes by 60 percent or greater, the district would build a new elementary school where Rickard Elementary is located. It would open in 2015.

Wilkinson Elementary would then be torn down and a new middle school would be built on that site.
