Jays sweep in Grand Forks

A solid performance put Jamestown in the final four at the Grand Forks Sertoma tournament on Friday.

The Blue Jays took eight matches in a 40-25 win over Badger-Greenbush-Middle River (Minn.) in the opening round and followed that with a dominant 47-28 win over West Region rival Minot to punch its ticket to the semifinals at Grand Forks Central High School.

“It was a really exciting two matches,” JHS coach Greg White said.

Jamestown meets Perham at 9 a.m. today for the right to wrestle in the championship dual in the 16-team tournament. White called Perham the tournament favorite.

Jamestown defending state champion Zane Braun (152) got his 100th career victory with a pin over Corey Hasbrouck in 2 minutes, 54 seconds and earned a technical fall over Minot’s Brian Rabe in 4:57.

Also winning twice on the day were Paxton Mewes (113), Jaden Horsted (132), Mitch Ova (138), Brandyn Harr (160) and Kyle Anderson (220).

White was particularly pleased with Jakob Browning, who got his first win with a pin over Minot’s Tyler Stranberg with 3 seconds to go in the first period.

“That’s a nice, first-time win for Jakob,” he said. “That was a big deal for him there.”

The Blue Jays won the first three matches of both duals, sealing the deal with B-G-MR on a Horsted pin and an Ova decision after leading by six.

Against Minot, the Blue Jays got out to a 26-4 lead, never trailing in what could be looked at as a preview for the teams’ dual later this season.

White nixed any thoughts of this dual foreshadowing what’s to come.

“Sometimes you have people out of the lineup; I don’t know what they really have,” White said. “You got a match there with Jakob Browning that was really close. … We have to be ready to go when we go up there and wrestle them.”
