Jays lose 2 on second day

The Jamestown High School wrestling team faced stiff competition from Minnesota on the final day of the Sertoma wrestling tournament Saturday in Grand Forks.

After beating Greenbush (Minn.) and Minot on Friday to get into the semifinals of the 16-team tournament, the Blue Jays fell to eventual runner-up Perham 42-33. They also succumbed to Detroit Lakes 42-25 to finish in a tie for fifth place.

Against Perham, the Blue Jays won six matches. Jaden Horsted (132), Zane Braun (152), Brandyn Harr (160), Eathan Gumke (182), Triston Shipley (195) and Cullen Goter (285) each picked up a victory, with Horsted, Braun, Gumke, Shipley and Goter getting pins. The Jays were down 36-33 with one match to go, but unfortunately the remaining match was at 106 where Jamestown was open.

The Blue Jays were ahead 19-15 after winning five of the first eight matches against Detroit Lakes, but dropped five of the last six. Paxton Mewes (113), Gumke, Horsted, Braun, Harr and Caleb Ellingson (170) had wins. Mewes had the only pin for the Jays, which surrendered 10 pins in the 16 matches it lost in the two duals.

The Blue Jays visit Carrington at 7 p.m. Thursday.
