GRAND FORKS (AP) — Rocco Grimaldi and Carter Rowney had four points apiece to lead North Dakota over Denver 6-3 Saturday in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
The line with Rowney and Grimaldi combined for 10 points as ninth-ranked North Dakota (8-5-3, 5-2-3) followed up Friday’s 2-2 tie with a win.
“The biggest development of the game was the chemistry of that group,” North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol said. “They did a good job in all areas.”
Drake Caggiula and Joe Gleason each added two assists.
UND scored the only two goals of the third period to pull away down the stretch.
Rowney had two goals and two assists and Grimaldi chipped in one goal and three assists. Corban Knight had a goal and an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to 11 games.
Clarke Saunders made 20 saves.
Ty Loney and Joey LaLeggia scored power-play goals 17 seconds apart to make it 4-3 heading into the third period.
Getting through the major power play with the lead was a big point in the game, Hakstol said. It was set up by Dan Senkbeil’s checking from behind penalty.
“That’s a play we can’t have happen. It was a poor play,” Hakstol said.
Sam Brittain made 27 saves for sixth-ranked Denver (9-5-2, 7-3-2).
“It was a good win at the end of the day,” Hakstol added. “We did what we had to do.”
