There were no upsets during the opening day of the Barnes County Boys Basketball Tournament on Tuesday at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse in Valley City.
Maple Valley, LaMoure-Litchville-Marion, Milnor and Valley City all advanced to Thursday’s semifinals, where Maple Valley will square off against LaMoure-L-M and Valley City will face Milnor.
A stout Maple Valley defense did in the Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page Spartans in the first game of the tournament. The Raiders racked up 18 steals in the contest, led by Brady Behm with 4 swipes, which helped contributed to 30 F-S-H-P turnovers in the contest as the No. 1-seeded Raiders won by the final of 65-36.
The Raiders only turned the ball over nine times, as Jordan Haseleu led all scoring with 24 points for Maple Valley. James Richman tossed in 17 points for the winning team.
Austen Archer had a nice game for the Spartans, collecting 10 points and 17 rebounds. Maple Valley is the three-time defending champion of the Barnes County Tournament.
LaMoure-L-M also used its trademark defense to scoot past Enderlin, holding the Eagles under 35 points as the Loboes won 41-32. The win by the No. 4-seeded Loboes sets up an intriguing matchup against Maple Valley in the semifinals. The Lobes defeated Maple Valley 56-54 at Maple Valley High School on Dec. 3.
Drew Thielges dropped in 12 points to lead the Loboes, while Anthony Olson added 10. Daniel Lindgren paced the Eagles with 10 points.
It wasn’t the prettiest game, with Milnor and Barnes County North combining for 49 turnovers, but the No. 2-seeded Milnor Bison took down the Barnes County North Bison 68-44 by shooting a blistering 61 percent from the field.
Milnor also outboarded BCN 32-16, with Wyatt Mund collecting a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds for Milnor. Briton Bussman led Milnor with 24 points.
Brad Clemens and Jacoby Kramlich paced BCN’s offense with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
No. 3-seeded Valley City held Griggs County Central to just 8 points in the first half of play en route to defeating the Cougars 66-40 in the final quarterfinal game of the evening.
The Cougars struggled to find the bucket, converting just 11 two-point field goals and 3 treys in the game. They also squandered opportunities at the free-throw line, converting just 15 of 33 freebie attempts as Valley City racked up 26 fouls in the game.
Chase Carpenter posted a monster game for the Hi-Liners, scoring 29 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Riley Nelson led the Cougars with 10 points, as GCC (2-1) picked up its first loss of the season.
In the consolation bracket on Thursday, F-S-H-P will face Enderlin, and Barnes County North will take on Griggs County Central.
