Study: Williston's population could be 44K by '17

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A new study projects that a city in the heart of North Dakota's oil boom could grow by more than 10,000 people within the next five years.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A new study projects that a city in the heart of North Dakota's oil boom could grow by more than 10,000 people within the next five years.

Forum Communications reports (http://bit.ly/UCbeq9) that a study from North Dakota State University says Williston's population could grow to 44,000 by 2017.

The figures include permanent residents and temporary workers related to the region's oil boom.

Current estimates show that Williston has about 33,000 people, including both permanent residents and workers who have homes elsewhere.

The 2010 U.S. Census put Williston's population at 14,716. This number does not include workers who live in temporary housing.

City leaders say they need population estimates to plan for services and request funding from legislators.
