A Devils Lake, N.D., man died Wednesday when the car he was driving struck the rear side of a flatbed trailer, the North Dakota Highway Patrol reported.

The crash happened at 5:20 p.m. on U.S. Highway 2, six miles southeast of Devils Lake.

The patrol said David Storsteen, 76, Devils Lake, was driving a 2010 Buick Lucerne westbound on the highway en route to Devils Lake when he struck the left rear side of a flatbed trailer that was being pulled by a 1995 Freightliner truck tractor. The Freightliner's driver, Melvin Armbrust, 69, Forest River, N.D., had been attempting to cross U.S. Highway 2 and head east toward Grand Forks.

Storsteen was wearing a seat belt and Armbrust was not wearing one. Armbrust was not injured.

Agencies responding in addition to the patrol were the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department and Devils Lake Rural Fire Department.

Severe damage was reported to the Buick; minor damage was reported to the semi trailer.

The crash is still under investigation.
