Short-handed Blue Jays drop dual to Cardinals

Jamestown was short-handed and Carrington took advantage. Missing three starters to injury, the Blue Jays surrendered four pins, a technical fall and forfeited 18 points in a 47-34 loss the Cardinals. “(Wednesday) at noon we were solid. Then three guys go down and that throws a wrench into it,” said coach Greg White. “That’s the way it goes. You have to have the next man up and we just didn’t have them.”

The Blue Jays were without Paxton Mewes at 113, Mitch Ova (138) and Ryan Hillerud (145).

Still, the match started nicely as Eathan Gumke and Triston Shipley put the Jays up 12-0 with pins at 182 and 195.

The next seven matches all went to the Cardinals, however, highlighted by pins from Austin Schuldheisz (220), Cordell Schroeder (285), Scott Johnson (120) and 126-pounder Chaz Bauer.

“Hats off to them. They have some good kids and they wrestled well,” White said.

Carrington, which improved to 4-1 in duals on the season, also got a tech from Billy Holtan at 145.

The Blue Jays won six of the 11 contested matches.

Jaden Horsted got a late pin of Patrick Freeman at 138. Zane Braun, ranked No. 1 in the state at 152, also won by fall, getting Brett Lyman at 3:43.

Brandyn Harr (160) and 170-pounder Caleb Ellingson piled up 10 points in the final two matches of the dual, but the deficit was too big to make much of a dent.

“We had a lot of kids wrestle well. Here we go with the morale victory thing again, but at the end of the day they got us,” White said.

The Blue Jays are back in action Saturday at a tournament in Valley City.
