Jerry Ronholm introduced Lori McGuire, executive director of the James River Senior and Community Center, to speak to Kiwanis members at its recent meeting.
McGuire started working at the senior center in 2001 and in 2006 became the executive director. She spoke on Classic Catering which is the mainstay that keeps the senior center going. She handed out pictures of the old hospital where they will be located beginning in February. The center will have a much larger kitchen and more space for the staff. The dining room will seat 150 to 200 guests. The chapel will also seat 125 guests which can hold weddings and funerals. There is a ballroom dance floor for 200 to 225 guests. She said the benefits for them would be that it is much closer to downtown, there are more parking spaces, there will be seniors living right there in the building and the day care that they cook for is also in the building. They will cook three meals a day for the seniors and they hope to have more contracts now that there is room. The Cafe Charlotte, named after Char Bellon, will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to the public. The apartments are all done in the building and they are now working on the elevators.
Sandy Franke led the meeting with 22 members attending. Don Caine led the group singing accompanied by Sharon Caine. “Happy Dollars’” collection was for the Salvation Army. Janna Bergstedt said Kiwanis is planning on another Kids Against Hunger event which is tentatively scheduled for March 2. The site is yet undetermined. Since the weekly meetings fall on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, there will be no regular meetings at that time. Charles Krebs will introduce Ritchie Wolf of Otter Tail Power Co., who will be speaking about the line project through Jamestown at the Jan. 7 noon luncheon meeting at the Lantern Room. Anyone interested in becoming a member of Jamestown Kiwanis is invited to attend a meeting.
