ND man sentenced to 8 years for child abuse

A Dickinson man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for child abuse.

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — A Dickinson man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for child abuse.

The Dickinson Press reports that 27-year-old Demetrius Gant was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty.

Authorities say Gant allegedly shook his then 4-month-old daughter in August 2011.

Dr. Rafael Ocejo testified that the baby sustained permanent brain injury from swelling and bleeding on the surface of her brain.

Judge Zane Anderson denied a request that Gant not be required to begin serving his sentence until after the holidays.
