Optimist Club honors athletes

Jamestown High School’s Brenna Pritchert and Eathan Gumke, along with Jamestown College’s Carly Jensen and Johnny Gonzalez, have all been selected as the Jamestown Optimist Club’s athletes of the week.

Jamestown High School’s Brenna Pritchert and Eathan Gumke, along with Jamestown College’s Carly Jensen and Johnny Gonzalez, have all been selected as the Jamestown Optimist Club’s athletes of the week.

Pritchert, a junior defenseman on the Blue Jay girls hockey team, scored the overtime winner to give the Jays a 6-5 win over Grand Forks. It was the program’s first ever win over Grand Forks.

Brenna has been a mainstay at defense for the Blue Jays since the eighth grade.

Gumke, a junior wrestler for the Blue Jays, notched a pin during the team’s dual against Carrington and went on to win his respective weight class at the Valley City Tournament. Gumke pinned each of his opponents in that tournament.

Jensen, a junior on the Jimmie women’s basketball team, scored 23 points on 7 of 16 shooting as the Jimmies split two games over the weekend. The White Bear Lake, Minn. native scored 8 points in a win over Presentation on Friday and led the Jimmies with 15 points in a tight battle with UND on Saturday.

Jensen went 5 of 9 from beyond the 3-point stripe and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line. She also collected 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and a steal over the two games.

Gonzalez, a sophomore 165-pounder on the Jimmie men’s wrestling team from San Jose, Calif., pinned a Ridgewater opponent, lost a one-point decision, and came back for a pin over a St. Johns grappler — despite suffering a rib injury in the second match —at the Ridgewater Tournament on Saturday.
