Authorities say a Wahpeton man has been fined more than $7,500 for illegally trapping a bald eagle.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say a Wahpeton man has been fined more than $7,500 for illegally trapping a bald eagle.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says Jay P. Schuler was sentenced on Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to a charge of taking and trapping a bald eagle in violation of the Federal Eagle Act.

Authorities say the eagle was caught in a spring trap one year ago. Authorities say a turkey carcass was used to lure the bird.

The eagle has permanent damage to a talon but has been released to the wild.
