CHICAGO (AP) — One of two convicted bank robbers who was captured days after a daring escape from a high-rise downtown Chicago federal jail shuffled into a brief court hearing Friday, shackled at the arms and legs.

A federal judge told Joseph “Jose” Banks during the hearing that he is charged with escape. Banks responded that he understood.

The FBI said Banks, 37, was arrested about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, days after he and another inmate somehow broke a large hole into the bottom of a 6-inch window of the Metropolitan Correctional Center, dropped a makeshift rope made of bed sheets out and climbed down about 20 stories to the ground.
