The Jamestown Police Department and Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office were called to the Stutsman County Correctional Center at 7:09 p.m. Sunday to assist with approximately eight unruly inmates.

As they did, they found that smoke was coming from inside one of the small cells within a main cell block, said Sgt. Justin Blinsky of the JPD, shift commander at the Stutsman County Communications Center.

Inmates in the cell were escorted into another secure portion of the correctional center, and the Jamestown Fire Department was called to extract some of the smoke. By the time the JFD arrived, however, most of the smoke had dissipated, and the JFD just reviewed what had happened and surveyed the scene, Blinksy said.

The incident remains under investigation, he said.
