Arts aplenty: Arts Center has new offerings for a new year

With the new year around the corner, the Arts Center in Jamestown is opening its doors to more people with new groups meeting throughout the month.
“You don’t have to be an Arts Center member to participate in any of these,” said Taylor Barnes, Arts Center director. “It’s great if you support the Arts Center with a membership but it’s not necessary.”
The first new group meeting is for digital photography enthusiasts. It will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month starting Jan. 6 at the Hansen Arts Studio.
“There have been a lot of beginning photography classes that have been taught here and a couple second- level classes and some people that haven’t been able to take them or have taken one, said ‘we would really like to get together and continue learning with one another,’” Barnes said.
Anyone interested in digital photography is welcome to come and discuss tips and tricks for getting a great shot.
Although not a new event, An Artful Happy continues on the second Tuesday of each month, with the next one at 5 p.m., Jan. 8 at the Hansen Arts Studio.
“Artful Happy Hour is a chance to try your hand at something different in the arts without making a major commitment of time,” Barnes said. “… You can try something once to see if you ever want to step foot in that territory again.”
It’s also a chance for adults to bring their favorite beverage and socialize in a different setting.
With Caravanserai in town at various times next year, Barnes thought this would be an excellent opportunity to start a classic movie night, with the first showing being “Casablanca” at 7 p.m. Jan. 17.
Another classic film will be shown on the third Thursday of each month.
The group meeting on the last Monday of each month, starting at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 28 will be the writer’s circle.
The Arts Center has participated in the Big Read and National Novel Writing Month in the past and this is a group for local writers to meet. It’s for anyone writing anything from a novel to memoirs.
Those looking for yoga can also take classes at 8:30 a.m. Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 5 and 19. People will be able to buy a punch card good for five or 10 sessions at the door. The five-session card is $27.50 and the 10-session card is $55. For more information contact Sherry Schmidt at 320-3038.
January also has a pair of performances, the first being “An Evening with the McIntyres,” at 7:30 on Friday, Jan. 4.
The Jamestown Fine Arts Association showcases local talents and for this show the McIntyre family will perform a variety of musical acts.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $3 for students and are available at the door.
The 2nd ACT Community Theater group also returns to the stage with the Neil Simon play “Rumors,” Jan. 24-26.
“Another talented group of actors brings enjoyment to the stage, entertainment to the stage showcasing their talents,” Barnes said.
The dinner theater is a farce and involves members of high society arriving for a dinner party, only to find things aren’t quite going according to plan.

January also holds the Arts Center annual Wine and Cheese event with wine and cheese from around the world.
The event is from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. Tickets are $30 and available at the Arts Center.
In addition to the Arts After School program starting Jan. 8 on Tuesday and Thursday the Arts Center will offer theater classes for middle school students at the middle school.
“We thought we’d give it a try at the middle school and focus on theater knowing that you don’t necessarily have to be on stage to participate in this,” Barnes said.
Other components include stage and costume design, lighting and writing. To sign up call the Arts Center — cost varies.
Finally two exhibits will be featured at the gallery during January.
The first exhibit, “Cowboy Stuff, Sweethearts and Minotaurs,” is by western abstract artist Walter Piehl and will run until Jan. 12. The second exhibit, “Literacy Without Borders,” with photos and stories by Pam Retting starts Jan. 17 and runs into February.
The exhibits are free to view from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“Look at what the community would be missing if the Arts Center wasn’t in this community,” Barnes said.
