The Blue Jays ran into a hot goalie Thursday and were cooled off.
Jamestown peppered Park Rapids goalie Shania Thompson with 37 shots, but only one of them got through in a 3-1 loss at the Crookston (Minn.) Holiday Tournament.
It was just the second loss of the season for the 7-2 Blue Jays.
“We’ve been fortunate. We’ve won four 1-goal games and two in overtime. The bounces have gone our way, today they didn’t and that’s hockey,” JHS coach Brad Schaack said. “Their goalie was legit, and I noticed it in warm ups.”
The Blue Jays put 14 shots on Thompson in the first and third periods. Amber Schaack’s 12th goal of the season early in the final frame made it 3-1. But that was all Thompson allowed.
“The effort was there. I wasn’t disappointed one bit in how hard the girls played, things just didn’t go our way today,” Schaack said.
The Blue Jays had just 10 skaters, one fewer than normal. However, Park Rapids dressed just 12, although they do have a JV.
“It was interesting to see a bench that looked like ours,” Schaack joked.
Park Rapids scored twice in the first period and added another in the second.
“All their goals were legit,” Schaack said.
Carissa Finck finished with 14 saves.
The Blue Jays did pressure late, pulling Finck in favor of an extra skater, but weren’t able to make a dent.
“It wasn’t like the girls weren’t out there trying,” Schaack said. “We were 0-for-4 on the power play that hurt. We had worked on it in practice and it looked good, but we couldn’t get set up really well tonight.”
The Blue Jays have another tough game today at 2:30 when they face Grand Forks, which leads the state in points with 22, six more than third-sitting JHS.
Jamestown beat the Roughriders here 6-5 in overtime Dec. 15, but they were without Ashley Becker that night, who Schaack said is, “probably their best player.” Becker will play today.
“It’ll be tough, but we’ll see what happens,” he said. “It will be good competition.”
