A cold night shooting cost the Jimmie women Saturday night.
Jamestown College shot just 35 percent in a 72-61 loss to Montana Tech in Las Vegas.
The 11th-ranked Jimmies, who lost for just the second time in 15 games, made only 21 of their 60 shots. They finished 1-1 at the Las Vegas Shootout, which was played at Oasis Durango High School.
“We were just off. Offensively, defensively, we didn’t execute, but that’s not to take anything away from them. Give Tech credit, they played well and they deserved to win the game,” JC coach Greg Ulland said.
It was an impressive victory for the Orediggers (8-5), who were playing their third game in as many days.
The Jimmies led 30-27 at halftime, but Tech hung 47 points on the board in the second half, which is just 12 fewer than JC allows on average per game.
“Too many breakdowns defensively and that was disappointing,” Ulland said. “If we’re not shooting well, which we weren’t, it shouldn’t prevent us from going out there and getting stops defensively and clearly we didn’t get enough of them.”
Tied at 51 with eight minutes to go, the Orediggers reeled off eight straight points to take a lead they would never give back. The Jimmies had led for much of the game prior to the spurt, but ended up getting the ‘A’ game from Tech, which got a nice resume-boosting win.
“We talk about that all the time. We’re going to get everybody else’s best effort,” Ulland said. “They came out and took it to us, especially in the second half, and we didn’t respond like we needed to.
“We didn’t do the little things well enough. Maybe they’re not things that show up statistically, but they’re things you have to do to win and we didn’t.”
Carly Jensen (12) and Amber Ramlo (11) were the only Jimmies in double figures. Ramlo also had eight rebounds. Hannah Steele dished out four assists, but also had four of the team’s 21 turnovers.
Mandy Machinal carried the load for Tech, pouring in a game-high 25 points. She made all three of her team’s 3-pointers. Tech made 25 2s and sank 19 of 23 free throws. The Jimmies went 11 of 20 from the stripe.
On Friday night, the Jimmies churned out a nine-point win over Montana-Western.
Jamestown College held the Bobcats to just 31 percent shooting, while Jensen, Bridget Schuneman and Kayla Roemmich each had 11 points.
The Jimmies forced 20 turnovers and made 15 of their 20 free throws.
Ramlo had six rebounds and four blocks before fouling out.
Jensen made two of the their six 3-pointers.
The Jimmies will spend a couple days in Las Vegas before heading to Espanola, N.M., to face Northern New Mexico College on Thursday.
