Charles was born May 15, 1939 in New York, the son of Virginia Hunt. He spent his early years in New York. He moved to North Dakota in April 1978. He pursued his dreams of being a newspaper man by attending college in Valley City. He spent time with the Dickinson Press, Mott Pioneer Press and eventually owned the Cannonball Chronicle in Mott.
