Class B roundup: Carrington into tournament semifinals

Carrington junior Kayla Hochhalter knocked down five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points to help the Cardinals take down Munich-Starkweather 70-29 in the first round of the Lake Region Girls Basketball Tournament in Devils Lake on Thursday night.

The Cards (2-2) were well on their way to victory after the opening 8 minutes, leading the Magic Storm 20-2 after period No. 1. Hannah Lipetzky also poured in 18 points for the winning team.

Carrington rolls on to face North Star in tonight’s semifinals at the Devils Lake Sports Center. The Bearcats earned the date with Carrington after rolling big over Four Winds-Minnewaukan 68-34.

Just like Carrington, North Star was fueled by a dominant opening quarter, outscoring the Indians 21-4 in the frame. Kelsey Teubner and Allie Heisler led the way for the Bearcats with 19 and 17 points, respectively.

Lakota/Adams-Edmore will face the Devils Lake JV team in the first semifinal game of the day at 6 p.m. The Raiders defeated Dakota Prairie 70-22 in Thursday’s opening round, while Devils Lake edged Drayton/Valley-Edinburg 42-41.

The Lady Lions of Linton-HMB improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 District 6 play with a 12-point, 52-40 victory over the Central Prairie Firebirds in Gackle.

Kaidra Larson had a nice night offensively for the Lions, pouring in a game-high 16 points. Linton-HMB led by just 5 points at the half and by 8 points (38-30) after three, put a pair of McKenna Flyberg 3-pointers in the fourth period helped the Lions put the game away.

Flyberg finished the evening scoring 8 points.

Central Prairie was led by Madi Moldenhauer’s 15 points, and a pair of 3-pointers and 9 points from Jordan Spitzer. The Firebirds left opportunities at the free-throw line, converting just 3 of 11 attempts.
