Two Jays in Rotary semis

Zane Braun and Jaden Horsted have plenty of reason to be happy with their performances on Friday.

But the two are likely looking for more, as they compete in the championship round of the prestigious Bismarck Rotary wrestling tournament today at the Bismarck Civic Center.

The Blue Jays have three wrestlers still alive at the Rotary, also boasting Paxton Mewes (113) in the wrestlebacks after he fell to Fargo South’s Marlo Bell by 14-3 decision in the semifinals. He had to beat Jacob Berg of Wahpeton, Garett Forristall of Beulah-Hazen and Tyler Keener of Grand Forks Central to get there.

Braun and Horsted, however, are looking for the tournament’s ultimate prize.

Braun, at 152, downed Ben Trenne of Grand Forks Red River by pin in 2:52. He also logged pins over Grand Forks Central’s Spencer Oen (2:39) and Fargo North’s Caleb Worral (3:24). He wasn’t tested in the semifinals either, dispatching Aberdeen’s John Frisco by 12-3 major decision. He’ll play Grand Forks Central’s Bryce Fish for the title.

Horsted (126) pinned Beulah-Hazen’s Damian Eslinger (2:30), decisioned Sidney’s Ryan Chatterton 10-8 and pinned Sturgis’ Jesse Skidmore in 2:44. He beat Rapid City Central’s Alan Heidinger by 6-3 decision in the semifinals. He meets Mandan’s Curt Zachmeier in the championship match.

Action continues today with wrestlebacks and finals.
