Blue Jays earn road sweep

DICKINSON — The Dickinson High boys hockey team would love to have the first 10 minutes of the first period back.

Jamestown scored three first-period goals en route to a 4-1 West Region win over Dickinson on Saturday at the Dickinson Recreation Center.

“It’s a failure to play three periods of hockey again,” Dickinson head coach Tom Folske said. “It wasn’t being ready. I’m going to put that on the head coach. That’s not going to happen again.”

In fact, it didn’t take long for Jamestown to get comfortable on the road ice. Austin Rene scored the Blue Jays’ first goal 1 minute, 39 seconds into the game. Nick Stockert followed with another less than 5 minutes later.

Jake Stilwell, who leads the Blue Jays with 13 goals and nine assists, scored the team’s final two goals.

The Blue Jays’ (4-6, 4-4 West) objective after the first period was to continue to apply pressure. However, Jamestown head coach Matt Stockert thought his team let up a little bit.

“Second period, when you want them to attack and go after them, we kind of sat back and let Dickinson do what they wanted to do,” he said. “It turned into some offensive opportunities for them. I thought the kids regrouped after the second period and finished the game on a good note.”

After the rough first 10 minutes, the Midgets (5-6, 3-5 West) settled down. The loss marks the first time this season Dickinson has fallen below .500.

After starting the season 3-0, the Midgets have lost six of their last eight games.

“We can’t dig ourselves into a hole like that,” Dickinson senior captain Brendin Steiner said. “We usually don’t come out that flat. If we can play hard throughout the game, we can be at the top of the WDA.”

Steiner netted Dickinson’s lone goal of the game — his third of the season — as Tim Knudson came in on the assist. Jamestown’s Brandon Stahlhut was charged with a roughing penalty and with 19 seconds left in the second and Dickinson scored seven seconds later.

In the crease for Jamestown was Ben Walz, who stopped 24 shots. Dickinson senior Jamison Gray made 17 saves.

“Ben played real well,” Matt Stockert said. “He saw the puck real well, he stopped the first one and didn’t leave too many rebounds.”

Both teams play Mandan next week. Jamestown plays the Braves on Tuesday and Dickinson hosts them at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Dickinson girls hockey team received a boost of momentum after Rachel Lantz scored with 10:53 left in the first period to tie the game at 1.

After that, however, Jamestown supplied 11 unanswered goals en route to a 12-1 victory.

“I felt like we started off strong and let the game go after that,” Dickinson head coach Lauren Hansen said. “It just gives us something to work on for next time.”

Lantz’ goal, which Kayla Wallace and Kira Zastoupil came on to assist, knotted the game a little over 6 minutes into the game.

Steph Kamlitz led the Blue Jays with four goals and one assist, while Larissa Wiest added two goals and Amber Schaack supplied one goal and two assists.

The Blue Jays (10-2, 8-1 state) had seven players score goals. Elly Milender added three assists.

Jamestown’s Ally Dion got her first start in goal and finished with 11 saves. Dickinson’s Paige Fahlstrom stopped 26 shots in the first and second periods. Kelsey Gillen finished out the game for the Midgets with three saves.

The Blue Jays have a big game looming on Tuesday when they host unbeaten Fargo North at 7 p.m.
