1888 – 125 Years Ago

Yesterday’s heavy snow-fall laid the foundation for a disagreeable day today and the wind this morning successfully undertook to complete the job. Old Boreas let loose another blast and the snow has been drifted and piled up until the unlucky pedestrian even through the business portion, is compelled to wade knee deep in the beautiful. No. 1, the eastbound limited, arrived this morning at 10 o’clock, over six hours late and all other passenger trains were reported delayed.

Opera House Re-opens New Year’s Night

Latest Moving Pictures and Songs Included in Two Performances Every Night.

Wednesday evening, January 1st, the Jamestown opera house reopened under new management, presenting moving pictures and illustrated songs at each performance, there being two shows every evening except Sundays. Manager A. J. Kavanagh is in the city from Grand Forks arranging for the opening.

The new manager states that the Bijou will be closed for the present. There have been some improvements at the opera house. A new “Simplex”, the last word in moving picture machines, has been installed, entirely enclosed and safe, and approved by the underwriters association. It throws an accurate, clear and steady picture, as nearly perfect as can be obtained. Machines of this type cost $275.

The shows each evening include four reels of pictures, songs and music, and accompaniments by piano and drums. The picture reels are the finest and latest produced, some being shown here before going to the city houses.

Janice Ann Legge Of Sanborn First Baby Born In Year 1938

Janice Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Legge, Sanborn, was the first baby born in a Jamestown hospital in the year 1938 and will receive many lovely gifts from Jamestown business men.

She was born at Trinity Hospital at 1:41 o’clock January 1, 1938.

Janice Ann weighed eight pounds and eight ounces. She is the fifth child of her parents who now have three daughters and two sons. They live on a farm near Sanborn.

1963 – 50 Years Ago

S. Anderson Joins Staff Of Burdick

Scott Anderson of Jamestown has joined the Washington staff of Sen. Quentin N. Burdick, D-N-D.

In a message from Washington today, Burdick said Anderson will serve as a legislative assistant.

Anderson was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for east district congressman in North Dakota last year and is a former Democratic-Nonpartisan League campaign director and state representative from Stutsman County.

Board Of Higher Education Votes 6-1 To Close ESTC

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education voted 6-1 today to recommend that the State Legislature close Ellendale State Teachers College.

The actual decision will have to be made by the Legislature convening here Tuesday.

Wind chills (b-r-r-r-r-r) at 76 below

A blast of arctic air slammed into North Dakota with winds that hit 40 miles per hour and produced wind chills of more than 70 degrees below zero this morning.

Winds were gusting from 25 to 40 miles per hour statewide and wind chills reached 76 degrees below zero in north central North Dakota, the weather service said.

Temperatures at 9 a.m. ranged from 13 degrees below zero at Bismarck to 18 below at Devils Lake and Minot. It was 14 below at Fargo, 15 below at Grand Forks and Jamestown and 16 below at Williston.
