A long road trip came to a rough end for the Jimmie basketball teams on Saturday in Denver.
The 11th-ranked JC women will likely see that ranking drop after finishing 2-2 on their trip, while the men’s road woes continued as Johnson & Wales made a clean sweep of things in a pair of Association of Independent Institution games.
The Jimmies are back on the road this weekend, heading for South Dakota to play Mines Friday and Oglala Lakota College Saturday.
Johnson & Wales 78, JC 76
The normally stingy Jimmies allowed the 7-13 Wildcats 44 second-half points as Johnson & Wales rallied late.
The Jimmies (14-3) led 65-57 with eight minutes to go and then 71-64 with just over four to play, but could not close it out as the Wildcats finished on a 14-5 run.
Jamestown College starters Carly Jensen (18), Hannah Steele (17), Bridget Schuneman (15), Amber Ramlo (10) and Morgan Mathison (4) combined for 64 of the team’s 74 points, but it was not enough.
The two teams combined for 62 free throw attempts in the game. The Jimmies made 20 and the Wildcats 26.
Kristen Ward led all scorers in the game with 21 points for the Wildcats.
Johnson & Wales 55, JC 50
Points were hard to come by for both in the nightcap, but the Wildcats work at the stripe was the difference.
Neither team shot better than 35 percent, but Johnson & Wales got a little home-cooking as they took a whopping 37 free throws in the game, making 28. The Jimmies, who fell to 1-9 in road games, took just eight foul shots and made half.
Taylor Newton topped the Jimmies (7-11) with 13 points. Mark Hoge added 11 and Davon Thomas was two rebounds short of a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds as they went winless (0-4) against Arizona Christian, Northern New Mexico and Johnson & Wales over the holiday trip.
