Qualifying more swimmers for state was the primary goal for coach Ben Smith and the Blue Jays Tuesday night.

After it was over, they had made it happen.

Andy Oslund earned a spot in the 200 and 500 freestyles, while Colt Rasmussen did the same in the 200 individual medley (2:14.82) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.84) to lead the way in a dual against Bismarck Century.

“We had some kids doing different events, hoping more would qualify and we were able to do that,” Smith said. “The kids did really well.”

Oslund won the 200 free in a time of 2:00.09, one of two top-place finishes for the Blue Jays. He was also second in the 500 (5:35.77).

Bismarck Century won the dual, 113-64.

“We didn’t have a lot of rest coming off the meet in Minneapolis. It was a big travel weekend, but I thought the whole team responded really well,” Smith said.

Cayden Hare was the other new qualifier, doing so in the 200 free where his time of 2:06.9 was good for fourth.

The diving results were solid, too.

Riley Thom’s 202.20 edged Bismarck Century’s Adam Berglund for top honors.

Ian Eastham (158.10) and Dylan Koenig (157.70) were third and fourth.

“We’re kind of at the midseason point right now. We’re in the middle of finals and we’re getting ready for Grand Forks on Saturday,” Smith said. “They have a lot on their plates right now, but it’s important to have a good week of practice and have a good performance Saturday.”
