The deadline to register an event for Cabin Fever Days organized by the Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department is Monday.
The department has a list of events to be held over the first two weekends in February. Recreation Manager John Ruff said the goal of Cabin Fever Days is to get people outside and moving during the middle of winter.
“It’s easy to sit inside in the winter and get stuck in the doldrums. We want to get people out and enjoying the area,” he said.
To have an event included in the department’s official list, call 701-252-3982.
Chilly-Fest 2013 sponsored by the Zonta Club of Jamestown is just one Cabin Fever Days event. The chili cook-off/tasting fundraiser will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 519 First Ave. S.
Zonta member Lori Listopad is organizing the fundraiser this year.
“We’ve added a panel of what we’re calling ‘celebrity’ judges,” she said. “The judges will blind taste each entry in each category.”
The overall judges’ winner and people’s choice winner will receive $100. Listopad said there were 10 teams competing in last year’s event.
“We’d liked at least 10 teams or more for this year,” she said.
Entries will be judged in these categories: aroma, color, consistency, taste, originality and aftertaste. A winner will be chosen in each individual category with each winner receiving a certificate.
Listopad said there will also be a baked and fried potato bar, music, door prizes and more. A cash bar will also be available.
The cost is $5 per person.
“The funds raised go to Zonta’s worthy causes,” Listopad said. These causes include Safe Shelter, the Sexual Abuse Response Team services, general education diploma and certified nurse assistant classes and college scholarships, upkeep of Zonta Park, and Women’s Way.
Ruff said events tentatively planned for Cabin Fever Days include Soup for Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Feb. 9, at the Jamestown Elks Club, 201 First Ave. N; and a Bluegrass and Old Time Music Jam, 1:30 to 4 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Buffalo Mall.
The department will continue to have sledding at the Bunker at Hillcrest Golf Course, 606 26th Ave. SE, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays. Outdoor rinks at Leapaldt and McElroy parks will be open for ice skating. There will also be open skating from 7 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 3 and 10 at the John L. Wilson Arena, 1009 Seventh St. NE.
“We’ll have open gyms at Gussner and Roosevelt elementary schools on Feb. 2 and 9,” Ruff said.
After registration is closed, Ruff said a complete list of events, times and places will be available to the public.
