Stilwell shines but VC wins

On paper, the score was solid, but nothing more, said coach Dave Tews. Led by a personal-best score from sophomore Jenna Stilwell, the Blue Jays finished a disappointing second at the Wahpeton Invite on Thursday. Stilwell’s 34.350 was the “shining light,” according to Tews, but the story of the meet was Valley City and its 138.600.

“It was one of those where if you were watching the two teams compete you knew who was going to win today,” Tews said. “Valley City had an awesome meet.”

Alex Lind (35.550), Stilwell and Erin Hillerud (33.950) gave the Blue Jays the No. 1, 3 and 5-highest overall totals, but there was a drop off from there.

“We’ve been fortunate the last few meets where our 3-4-5 girls have been scoring pretty well. Today, we were just off,” Tews said.

Lind won on vault (9.35) and bars (9.2) plus all-around — very good scores for most — but a little down for the senior ace.

Stilwell’s 9.2 on vault was good for second to highlight her day.

“She’d been pushing and pushing that 34-mark then all of the sudden she broke through today,” Tews said. She had a very good meet.”

Also noteworthy was Kailey Albers fifth-place finish on vault at 8.95.

The Blue Jays get a rematch with the Hi-Liners Tuesday in Valley City in the annual Blue/White Dual before the Julie Ziegler Invite in Bismarck Jan. 18 where only six entrants per event are permitted.
