Fingerprinting to be expedited
The Bureau of Indian Affairs has announced an initiative to expedite fingerprinting of foster parents on the Fort Totten Indian Reservation.
FORT TOTTEN, N.D. (AP) — The Bureau of Indian Affairs has announced an initiative to expedite fingerprinting of foster parents on the Fort Totten Indian Reservation.
The BIA said it has provided three mobile fingerprinting units to the Spirit Lake Tribe and BIA social services staff on the reservation.
Under a 2006 law, all adults in a household where minor children are to be placed must be fingerprinted as part of a background investigation.
Assistant Secretary - Indian Affairs Kevin Washburn said the units and training show the BIA’s and the tribe’s commitment to protect the safety of the tribe’s children.
The BIA assumed control of the tribe’s social service programs in October after criticism that the tribe has failed to protect vulnerable children.
