Education bill would restructure funding

North Dakota lawmakers are getting a sneak peak at an education proposal that would provide more money to schools while providing property tax relief.

BISMARCK (AP) β€” North Dakota lawmakers are getting a sneak peak at an education proposal that would provide more money to schools while providing property tax relief.

Department of Public Instruction analyst Jerry Coleman delivered a preliminary report Wednesday to the House Education Committee. The legislation would permanently restructure the funding formula for kindergarten through 12th grade education.

Republican Rep. Mike Nathe of Bismarck, chairman of the committee, said the proposal could result in an historic piece of legislation. Said Nathe, β€œIt’s a big deal.”

Nathe said the bill should be filed by the end of the week. He hopes to have a hearing on it in about two weeks.
