DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota Highway Patrol trooper is recovering in a hospital after a crash last week near Devils Lake.

Ramsey County Sheriff Steve Nelson told KZZY radio that the crash happened on Jan. 8 on U.S. Highway 2. He said 31-year-old Trooper Brian Mehlhoff was apparently responding to a vehicle in the ditch when he turned in front of another vehicle and was struck on the driver’s side.

Nelson said Mehlhoff did not have his emergency lights on at the time and the crash and is being cited for an improper left turn. He doesn’t know where Mehlhoff is hospitalized but said the trooper’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Two people in the other vehicle were treated at a hospital and released.
