North Dakota businesses and industry are invited to participate in a university-industry technology transfer cost sharing program, Students in Technology Transfer And Research (STTAR). STTAR provides a cost-effective opportunity to companies across North Dakota to hire upper-level college students during the summer. The STTAR students assist companies in reaching goals through new and innovative approaches to a long-standing company project, or help jump-start new ideas. Students bring academic training and experience to help companies address challenging science and technology problems. To participate, companies must apply and demonstrate that students will make a contribution to company performance, products or processes, using science and technology. Companies compete for ND EPSCoR funding and pay at least half of the students’ salaries.

More than 98 companies have participated in STTAR. Funding is available for up to 25 students. Past projects included engineering, design and testing of new products; analysis of computer expert systems and development of computer software; remote sensing and automated mapping system; chemical research; development and troubleshooting automated tooling and fabrication equipment; and waste materials utilization.

A business enterprise does not have to be a technology company to be eligible. It is the project or research effort that must be based in science, engineering, or mathematics.
