It may only be January, but the Jamestown College men’s and women’s track team got its season under way on Saturday at the Northern State Indoor in Aberdeen, S.D.
The Jimmies already started jumping over what usually seems to be season-long hurdles, as sophomore Taylor Brown won the high jump with a career-best leap of 1.62 meters. The mark qualifies her for nationals, which take place the first weekend in March in Geneva, Ohio.
“Taylor has really worked between her first and second seasons, and it is nice to see her rewarded so early,” said JC coach Jim Clark about the Cavalier product.
Also placing in the high jump was Micki Glass, who recently transferred from Boise State. She was second with a 1.60.
“I am especially impressed with what Micki did,” Clark said, “because this first week has been quite a whirlwind for her getting to know people.”
Alyssa Sanders won the 400 with a time of 1:05.73, though her only competitors were teammates Brown and Caitlin Bossio, who finished second and third, respectively.
Nikki Iverson also had a strong meet, taking second in the triple jump (10.63 meters), sixth in the high jump (1.45) and eighth in the shot put (8.52).
“It sure is a pleasure to have someone who works as hard as Nikki on our team,” Clark said. “She is working on events for the pentathlon, so she was a pretty busy person yesterday.”
Third-place finishes went to Samantha Goff (1,600), Emerald Gyuricza (pole vault), Bernie Bachel (800) and the 1,600 relay team.
“This was a great start for some of our kids,” Clark said. “Nerves play a big part in the first meet no matter how competitive it is for new freshmen.”
On the men’s side, Jessie Hacker threw the shot 13.59 meters to give the Jimmies their only winner on the day.
“That was a good effort,” JC men’s coach Ed Crawford said about Hacker.
However, JC had a variety of runners-up in Spencer Kamoni (800), Scott Roemmich (55 hurdles), Dave Londe (3,000) and Michael Brousseau (weight throw).
Kamoni’s time in the effort followed a solid run in the mile against a strong Division II field.
“That was a great double for Spencer. He’s really fit,” Crawford said. “I think we can get him qualified for nationals in the 800 and 1,000.”
Taking third was Adrian Paet-Bullaoit in the pole vault and Garrett Tenney in the weight throw.
Londe and Connor Doppler each posted lifetime bests in the 3,000.
“It was a decent first meet for us,” Crawford said. “It’s not easy when the other teams have already had one or two meets and it was our first, but overall it was a solid effort.”
The track and field teams are back at it on Saturday, when they travel to Moorhead, Minn., for the Concordia Indoor.
