Feeling ill most of the week, Zane Braun’s ability has been at the forefront of his success.
Braun, who scored a pin despite not feeling well against Dickinson on Thursday, wrestled in the Storhaug Invitational in Lisbon on Saturday, winning the 152-pound championship by 10-6 decision over Valley City’s Shane Undem.
“That’s a credit to him, even though he was not sharp in his normal way,” JHS coach Greg White said. “Now he’s gonna get some time to rest up and make a run at the end. He’s not at 100 percent at all.”
Jamestown finished with 114.5 points, good for eighth place. South Border won the tournament with 197 points, followed by Lisbon (143), Carrington (140.5), Oakes (137) and Central Cass (130).
The Blue Jays put three in the finals, but Jaden Horsted (132) and Eathan Gumke (170) fell to quality competition to earn second place.
Horsted, ranked third at his weight class in Class A, was major decisioned 15-6 by Gus McCarthy of Border West, a Minnesota co-op made up from Clinton, Graceville, Wheaton and Herman.
“It was really a good tournament for Jaden,” White said. “He took Jaden down a couple times and got some back points. Jaden was really wrestling hard. The kid was just that good. No fluke about it; the kid deserved that win.”
Gumke also fell by major decision, losing 15-2 to Oakes’ Cole Ehrlin in what White said was one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament.
Jamestown had one other placer in Triston Shipley, who entered unseeded but took fifth at 195, decisioning Lisbon’s Soren McDaniel 5-2 after McDaniel had beat him earlier in the tournament.
“He really exceeded expectations,” White said.
South Border had three champions in Blake Bosch (126), James Thielges (182) and Tanner Meidinger (195). Also winning titles were Lisbon’s Jace Berg (120), Napoleon’s Andrew Beine (220) and Carrington’s Cordell Schroeder (285).
By the end of this week, Jamestown will know where it stands with the Class A state dual tournament. The Jays host Mandan at 7 p.m. Thursday and then visit Minot on Saturday for a double-dual that will also include Williston. The Jays are arguably favored in all three duals and a sweep would get them to state for the first time since 2003.
Jamestown heads into the week still trying to iron out its lineup. White said he would like to find a place for Caleb Ellingson in the upper weights.
“It’s important to get that caliber of wrestler on the mat,” he said.
The status of senior Ryan Hillerud is also unclear, as he’s been injured. White said whether he’ll wrestle again is unclear.
