China trip is topic at Rotary meeting

Joan Morris, controller at Agri-Cover in Jamestown, was the guest speaker at the Jamestown Rotary Club weekly meeting. She was introduced by Rotary member Gail Martin. Morris gave a program on her recent trip to China.

Morris said she was drawn to visit China through her connection to the University of North Dakota, which has a relationship with a college in China. They flew into Shanghai and visited many sites in the country. She noted the population of the capital Beijing as being 41 million. She noted the many building projects going on everywhere. She explained that the government just takes over houses owned by residents and builds skyscrapers on the land. She said that most businesses were very labor intensive which surprised her. They visited the Great Wall of China and several museums. She said that transportation was modern and crowded. They also visited many landmarks including palaces and the financial areas. She said that they felt extremely safe whereever they went. She said that there were many Starbucks and Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants.

Quincy Backen presided over the meeting. “Happy Dollars” were collected by Sergeant of Arms Mark Olson. The invocation was given by Warren Tobin and Casey Stoudt led the singing with Gina Dahl at the piano. Guests at the meeting included Jamestown High School students Alex Lind, Shelby Rudland and Kyra Dewald. Rotary members welcomed back Rick Pfeiffer, who has been ill. Club members were reminded about the club project of selling movie tickets. The family movie series includes six movies on Saturday mornings for $15.

Next week Teresa Brecto will give the invocation and songs will be directed by Tim Ottmar. Austin Martin will be the sergeant of arms. Blaine Bergstedt will be in charge of the program.
