Bill: Move low-risk inmates to N.D. penitentiary

Lawmakers will consider a bill on Thursday advocating that the Missouri River Correctional Center property in Bismarck be used for a public park.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Lawmakers will consider a bill on Thursday advocating that the Missouri River Correctional Center property in Bismarck be used for a public park.

The measure says the facility and its low-risk inmate population would be moved to the state penitentiary. Cost of the move is pegged at $12 million.

The issue was debated during the 2009 Legislature, when the idea was tied to the expansion of the state penitentiary. Lawmakers passed a $73 million expansion project but struck wording about the MRCC move.
