Comets slip past Jimmies: Mayville State women win battle of ranked teams

If there was any question doubt about Mayville State’s lofty ranking and record, the Comets provided a pretty nice answer Thursday night.
Mayville State, ranked 20th in the latest NAIA top 25 poll, took a double-figure lead midway through the first half and kept it there for the final half hour in an impressive 92-79 win over the 14th-ranked Jimmies.
It was quite a turnaround from just four days earlier when Jamestown College beat the Comets fairly handily 79-61.
The big difference? Three-point shooting. The Jimmies made 11 Sunday compared to four Thursday.
“It was a big game, we had a good crowd and we laid an egg,” said JC coach Greg Ulland. “It’s disappointing. We didn’t play well offensively or defensively and when you do that against a good team, and they are a good team, that is what happens.”
It was a big, if not signature win for the Comets, who won for the 17th time in 19 games.
“It’s a big win for the team, for the program because of how good they (JC) are,” Mayville State coach Dennis Hutter said. “We certainly are happy to get a win like this.”
Mayville State’s emergence is a good thing big picture-wise for northern-tier NAIA basketball. With the Jimmies (14), Comets (20) and Valley City State (25) three teams are ranked inside the top 25.
“All three of those teams are really good. When you’re able to beat one you have to feel pretty good,” Nutter said.
It was an uphill struggle all night for the Jimmies. Never was the climb steeper then after former Dakota Prairie High School standout Sabrina Rude splashed in consecutive 3-pointers to put the Comets up by a whopping 26 points at 74-48.
“When you don’t get a hand up, or close out on their shooters, they’re going to burn you,” Ulland said. “It was that kind of night for us. Too make mistakes, just way too many.”
The Jimmies (18-4) didn’t fold up the tent despite the massive deficit. They whittled the deficit down to 10 (85-75) with two minutes left.
“Against them, with the way they can shoot it, you don’t feel comfortable until the clock reads zero,” Hutter said.
Rude, the McVille, N.D., product, poured in a game-high 24 points. Marcisa McMillan had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Despite the high point totals for both teams there was not much flow to the game with active whistles leading to 57 foul calls and 78 free throws. The Jimmies shot 30 of them and made 25.
Hannah Steele had 19 points and five assists for Jamestown College.
Amber Ramlo (13-10) and Bridget Schuneman (11-10) each had double-doubles for the Jimmies, who host Oglala Lakota College on Sunday.
