Blue Jays roll to win: Defeat Mandan 48-26 in home dual

The pinning continued and Jamestown senior Colin Crabtree set the tone.

Crabtree took down Mandan’s Benaiah Simburger and eventually secured the fall in what was one of four Jamestown first-period pins in the Blue Jays’ 48-26 West Region dual win Thursday at the JHS gym.

“That’s nice to see; if you can get a pin in the first period, it just gets the next guy going,” JHS coach Greg White said. “He got us going.”

Crabtree didn’t waste anytime taking Simburger to the mat, but pinning him proved difficult. He struggled with him on the mat before pinning him down and getting the fall with only 10 seconds to go in the first period.

“I knew there was short time on the clock,” said Crabtree, who wrestles at 195. “I knew I had to stick him to get that momentum.”

Jamestown won nine of 14 matches, five of which came on pins. Kyle Anderson stuck Mikael Fetch in just 30 seconds at 220 to keep the ball rolling. Mark Reynolds earned a forfeit at heavyweight to help the Blue Jays open up a 33-8 lead.

“We’re just battling every day to put people out there on the mat,” White said.

Jamestown’s Jaykob Browning and Dante Dillingham were out sick, so the Blue Jays started the match behind the 8-ball.

Still, Jamestown pulled out the win, thanks to a strong start. Jamestown’s Keith Shahin beat Dale Spilman by 9-4 decision and teammate Zane Braun scored 14 points in the first period, eventually pinning Sam Ravnaas early in the second.

Posting wins by pin were Paxton Mewes (113) and Mitch Ova (138). Jaden Horsted (132) pulled out a decision, while Eathan Gumke (170) took a forfeit.

The dual, which lasted just 45 minutes, was the final home action of the year for the Blue Jays, who have two duals on Saturday in Minot that have postseason implications.

If Jamestown can beat Minot and Williston, it will earn its first trip to the Class A state dual tournament since 2003, when it finished up four straight trips.

“This was a big win; we needed this one,” Crabtree saaid. “We’ve got two in Minot coming up, and we need to get those and we’ll be on our way.”
