Today, Barnes County North is hosting the 2013 Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Jamboree with five games beginning at 2 p.m.

In the opener, the Washburn and Heart River girls teams square off followed by Heart River’s boys taking on Kindred.

Midkota and Kindred’s girls play at 5 p.m., with both Barnes County North teams wrapping up the day. The Bison girls play at 6:30 against Dakota Prairie, with the boys taking on South Border at 8 p.m.

Barnes County North has held a similar event in recent years, but is taking it to the Civic Center for the first time. Students and athletes purchased $10 T-shirts with the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Donations can be made by calling or emailing BCN athletic director and girls basketball coach Brett Thielges at 426-1538 or brett.a.thielges.2@sendit.nodak.edu.

Jamestown College will hold a similar event Sunday when it hosts Oglala Lakota College (S.D.) at 2 and 4 p.m. Fans can donate $5 by texting “Coach” to 20222. Money goes to the American Cancer Society.

Trademark to the event coaches will be wearing sneakers as part of their attire. Players can wear various shoelace colors and officials can use pink whistles.

Coaches vs. Cancer events are held nationwide in high schools and colleges during this week of January.
