Jays win twice on ice

After a pair of losses midweek, the Blue Jays finished the weekend strong with a dominating win over Hazen-Beulah Saturday at Wilson Arena.

Jake Stilwell had a hat trick, Nick Stockert scored twice and seven different JHS players tallied goals in a 10-0 rout of Hazen-Beulah.

The game was the third in a stretch where the Blue Jays play six times in 12 days.

“It’s the first time in a long time we’ve went through something like this, but we kept up our energy and played 51 minutes of hockey,” said JHS captain Dakotah Spitzer.

The Blue Jays scored three goals in the first, five more in the second and ran four lines for more than half the game.

“We were changing every whistle and the kids were all consistently doing a pretty good job,” coach Matt Stockert. “We’re playing a lot of hockey in a short period of time, but if you’re going to play you might as well strap it up, play as well as you can and get on a roll going into the tournament.”

After Austin Rene broke the seal at 4:09 of the first, Stilwell scored the next three goals before Anthony Cook made it 5-0 with a nice birthday present at 11:19.

Nick Stockert buried the next two and Jakobi Lux put a bow on the second for an 8-0 JHS lead.

“Lots of guys scored. A lot had points. We have the kind of players and the team to do that,” Spitzer said.

Austin Meyer and Tommy Bruns got goals nine and 10 of the day for JHS in the third.

Brandon Stahlhut (2), Jack Jenson, Nick Schaack, Marcus Klein, Matt Grounds and Spitzer also earned points on the day via assists.

“We played 51 minutes of pretty solid hockey today. That’s something that’s been missing at times this season, but when we do we have the potential to do something,” Matt Stockert said.

Ben Walz earned his second shutout of the season with 22 saves.

The Blue Jays, in the middle of playing five straight home games, face two of the top teams in the West this week, starting Tuesday against Minot. West-leading Bismarck Century is here Thursday.

JHS 4, Williston 1

Despite not playing particularly well, the end result was still acceptable for the JHS girls in the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader at Wilson Arena.

The Blue Jays were sluggish for much of the game, but still scored four times and nearly got a shutout in a 4-1 win over Williston.

Coach Brad Schaack was more than happy to take the three points, six for the weekend counting Friday’s win, but not overly pleased with the performance.

“It wasn’t pretty. To be truthful we played some pretty uninspired hockey,” he said. “The better team lost today. They outplayed us pretty good.”

Amber Schaack scored two more goals, giving her a whopping 25 on the season, including the ice-breaker less than two minutes into the game. Steph Kamlitz made it 2-0 deep in the first. Haley Hillstrom got the first of her two assists on Schaack’s goal. Brenna Pritchert got one on the second.

Schaack’s unassisted tally at 11:37 of the second put it out of reach essentially. Elly Millender added a fourth later in the second with assists to Larissa Wiest and Hillstrom.

Carissa Finck stopped the first 26 shots she faced before the Coyotes avoided the shutout with less than 30 seconds left.

“You’re going to have one of these throw-away games in a season. … But we’ll take the three points for sure,” Schaack said.

That said, they don’t want to veer too far from form that has them 12-5 overall, 10-4 statewide, and challenging for a top four spot in next month’s state tournament.

“This won’t cut it when we get into the nitty gritty,” Schaack said. “I fully expect my girls to get back after it next week.”

The Blue Jays have a tough week looming with road games at Fargo North Tuesday and Grand Forks Saturday. Both teams, like the Blue Jays, are in the hunt for one of the top four spots.
