JHS loses 2 in Minot

The Jamestown High School wrestling team has been one of the hottest teams in the West Region the last two weeks.
But something changed on its way up to Minot for a double-dual with Minot and Williston on Saturday.
Minot won nine of 14 matches en route to a 51-27 win, while Williston won eight matches to edge the Blue Jays 38-33. With wins, Jamestown would have made the Class A state dual tournament for the first time since 2003.
However, it was not to be. Minot turned the tables on Jamestown as the latter beat the former at the Grand Forks Sertoma dual tournament in December.
“We went in there hoping to try and get them both to go to state, and we just didn’t wrestle very well,” JHS coach Greg White said. “We didn’t have our edge. We didn’t know what it was.”
Paxton Mewes (113), Jaden Horsted (132), Zane Braun (152) and Eathan Gumke (170) each came away with pins against Minot, while Triston Shipley (182) earned a 9-7 decision.
Mewes, Horsted, Braun also won against Williston, as did Nick DiLallo (120), Mitch Ova (138) and Brandyn Harr (160).
However, Jamestown struggled at the biggest three weight classes. Minot scored 18 points off three pins there, while Williston scored 15 points off a pin, a forfeit and a decision.
The Blue Jays dual Valley City at home on Friday in their final action before the West Region tournament, which starts Feb. 9 in Minot.
“It’s our last home dual and my last dual personally,” White said. “We’re going to have a lot of lasts that night.”
