Deep field, strong finish: JHS fourth at Blue Jay Invite

All but two teams were at the JHS pool on Saturday.

So by that standard, the Blue Jays have to really like where they’re sitting — and coach Ben Smith does.

Jamestown piled up 231 points to place fourth at the 9-team Blue Jay Invite on Saturday, which featured every team but Fargo North and South.

“The guys swam awesome,” Smith said. “We’ve been working hard in the pool and in the weight room. (Today) was a good boost for our confidence and showed the hard work is paying off.”

The highest JHS placer came on the diving board where Riley Thom had his season-best score of 336.30 to earn runner-up honors. Cody Lutman wasn’t too far behind in fourth (303..55).

“Riley did awesome. That is a very good score,” Smith said.

Individually, Andy Oslund put his speed on display, touching third in both the 50 (24.15) and 100 (52.50) freestyles.

He also anchored the Jays’ top placing relay when the 200 free team of Colt Rasmussen, Michele Simonetti and Braydon Love finished behind only Minot and Bismarck Century.

In the 50, the Blue Jays actually had two of the five best times as Hunter Boehm’s 24.46 earned him fifth.

Rasmussen had a typically solid day in the long swims. He was third in both the 200 (1:54.88) and 500 (5:20.88). Love, meanwhile, was sixth in the 200 (1:59.36).

Elsewhere, Boehm (56.80) and Simonetti (57.81) were 11th and 14th, respectively, in the 100 free. Cayden Hare touched 12th in the butterfly (1:05.48). Grant Curtis’ 2:25.04 was 16th in the 200 individual medley.

“We had a lot of season-best times. It’s hard to swim back-to-back days, but it didn’t seem to have a negative effect on our team,” Smith said. “We have a month, month-and-a-half to go. We’re staying healthy and making a lot of really good improvement.”

Bismarck Century and Minot are a cut above the rest of the state and combined for nearly 1,000 points. The Patriots had 519 to the Magicians’ 454. The same pack of teams, plus the two missing Fargo schools, will all get together next weekend for a two-day meet at the Bismarck Aquatics Center in what amounts to a preview for state.
