Class B roundup: Lions upset No. 8-ranked Clippers

Big adjustments in the second half paid off big time for the defending Region 3 champion Linton/H-M-B Lions against the No. 8-ranked Strasburg-Zeeland Clippers in Strasburg on Tuesday night.

Big adjustments in the second half paid off big time for the defending Region 3 champion Linton/H-M-B Lions against the No. 8-ranked Strasburg-Zeeland Clippers in Strasburg on Tuesday night.

The Lions erupted to outscore the Clippers 25-5 in the third period, erasing a 23-18 deficit at the half and replacing it with a commanding 43-28 advantage to start the final period of play, as they’d roll from there 56-43.

Tyler Humann came up clutch for the Lions in crucial third period, draining a pair of 3-pointers and scoring 10 of his 15 points in ball game. Ryan Schneider and Mason Ryckman also each scored 6 in the frame. Schneider also poured in 15 points.

Brody Nieuwsma led the Clippers offensively with 10 points. The previously undefeated Clippers fell to 14-1 overall, while the Lions improved to 13-4.

Seventh-ranked Carrington dropped its second straight game, this time falling to Harvey-Wells County in a District 7 affair.

The Cardinals did not score more than 12 points in any quarter and were held to six in the third.

Koby Houchin led three Hornets in double figures with 14 points. Andrew Alveshere added 12 and Jason Beck 12.

Seth Abaurrea led Carrington with 13 points, but the Cardinals misfired on 18 of their 21 3-point shots.

No. 5-ranked Four Winds/Minnewaukan ran out of room in its stat book, as 15 players cracked the scoring column to help the Indians eclipse 100 points in a victory over the Warriors in Four Winds.

The Indians’ largest output of the night came in the fourth period, as the team scored 30 in the frame. But no player scored more than 16 points, and that man was Ryan Hill. Hill didn’t record a bucket in the final 8 minutes.

Nor did the Indians’ second high-point man, Austin Longie, who scored all 15 of his markers in the first 3 periods.

Antoine Motley posted 20 for the Warriors, while Larse Azure Jr. dropped in 18.

The Bison teamed up to drain five total 3-pointers, en route to defeating the visiting Midkota Mustangs by 9 points.

BCN’s Derek Fletcher and TJ Steckler each connected twice from long range. Steckler led all scoring with 14 points.

Dalton Ehlers (13 points) and Austin Monson (11) led the Mustangs.

The Rebels of Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal picked up a District 5 win at home over the visiting Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier Rebels.

P-B-K’s Morgan Thomas splashed in a game-high 16 points, while E-K-M was led by Kelsey Fiest with 10 points. Both Thomas and Fiest hit a 3-pointer in the game.

The Lions’ Alex Umber scored a game-high 20 points, while McKenna Flyberg chipped in with a pair of treys and 15 points, helping Linton/H-M-B cruise in Strasburg.

After leading 25-13 at the half, the Lions put things away by outscoring the Clippers 28-15 in the second half. Suzanne Ternes paced the Clippers with 7 points.
