Optimist athletes earn weekly honors

The Jamestown Optimist Club announced its athletes of the week on Wednesday. Amber Schaack and Braydon Love earned honors for the prep awards, while JC’s Taylor Brown and Davon Thomas picked up the college awards.

Schaack, a senior defenseman, scored two goals in each of the Blue Jays’ wins over Minot and Williston last weekend. Amber has 25 goals on the season, which is second in the state.

Love, a junior, earned first place in the 200 and 500 freestyles in a dual against Williston on Friday. He also swam the most laps during a swim-a-thon to raise money for Special Olympics.

Brown, a sophomore, won the high jump at the Northern State Open with a mark of 5-foot-3 to qualify for nationals. The Cavalier native was also second in the 400 and ran a leg on the 1,600 relay.

Thomas, a junior from Gaffney, S.C., aided the Jimmies’ Dakota Tip-off Classic championship run, beating ranked teams in Dakota State and Valley City State. He scored 21 points against Dakota State and 18 against VCSU.
