Dewald’s 31 not enough in loss at Mandan

Jamestown’s Kyra Dewald scored a game-high 31 points including five 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough on Thursday night.

Mandan forced 28 turnovers, recording 17 steals and 11 blocks as a team in a 73-66 victory over Jamestown in?West Region action in Mandan.

Jamestown dropped to 4-3 in the region and 6-4 overall. The?Jays have lost three of their last four games.

Mandan, which improved to 4-5 in the region and 5-7 overall, avenged an overtime loss from December in Jamestown.

Lexi Goldade had 17 points and Courtney Goetz added 16 for the Braves, who won despite being outrebounded 52-36.

Jamestown’s Paige Peterson narrowly missed out on the double-double, recording nine points and 11 rebounds.

The Blue Jays never led in the game, falling behind 9-0 to start. They spent most of the contest trying to cut the deficit to single digits. When they were able to, Mandan always seemed to respond.

Jamestown fought back to cut Mandan’s lead to four at 54-50 midway through the second half after Dewald putback. However, the Braves responded with a six straight points that included a 3-pointer from JaeLyn?Russell.

With a little more than a minute remaining, Dewald drilled a 3-pointer to get the Blue Jays within four at 70-66.

However, the Braves were able to hold Jamestown scoreless the rest of the way while sinking 3-of-4 from the line.

Billie?Buchanan finished with nine points, and Addie Eamon and McKayla Orr each added six in the loss.?Orr missed a portion of the first half with an injury, but returned to the game in the second half. She scored four points in a row that included a steal from her to get the Jays within five at 68-63.

Turnovers, again, doomed Jamestown.

The?Blue?Jays had six miscues in the first three minutes of the game. They had 18 in the first half, but settled down in the second half, allowing them to rally.

It doesn’t get any easier for Jamestown as No. 4-ranked Bismarck High comes to town on?Saturday for a doubleheader, starting at 5:45 p.m.
