Fargo police warn of collection scam

Police in Fargo are warning residents about a telephone scam with someone posing as a local utility company representative.

FARGO (AP) — Police in Fargo are warning residents about a telephone scam with someone posing as a local utility company representative.

A resident told officers that he was contacted by someone claiming to be a collection agent with a local utility company demanding money for payment on a current account.

Police say the caller told the resident to buy a pre-paid money card and turn over the card’s number so the money could be transferred from the card. The person complied with the demands and lost about $500.
