New York Times calls N.D. ‘The Luckiest Place on Earth’
A cover story in Sunday’s New York Times Magazine calls North Dakota “The Luckiest Place on Earth.” The piece, titled, “Luckiest Place on Earth: In the belly of the boom in North Dakota,” by Chip Brown, features an in-depth look at the state’s oil boom: its impact on the land and people.
FARGO — A cover story in Sunday’s New York Times Magazine calls North Dakota “The Luckiest Place on Earth.”
The piece, titled, “Luckiest Place on Earth: In the belly of the boom in North Dakota,” by Chip Brown, features an in-depth look at the state’s oil boom: its impact on the land and people.
The story is accompanied online with photos by Charles Harbutt and a second article by Jon Margolis first published in 1995, titled “The Reopening of the Frontier.”
The 1995 story focused on the people and places near Carrington, N.D., with a theme of an emptying state.
In contrast, Sunday’s piece focuses on the influx of people and money, examining what is drawing outsiders in as well as how native North Dakotans view themselves.
“North Dakotans idealize themselves as more inclined to endure than to complain, certain it takes a special temperament to live in such forbidding country, where winters are brutal and culture is thin,” Brown writes.
