The Jamestown High School girls hockey team has a season full of firsts, even without Saturday’s accomplishment.
Along with feats like never having beaten a Fargo team — which the Blue Jays have done twice this season — Jamestown knocked out a couple more.
The Blue Jays beat Grand Forks for the third time this season, posting a 5-3 victory that gave them a school-record 14 wins.
Even more impressive is how the win came to be. Jamestown fell behind 3-0 after the first period and rallied with five goals the rest of the way.
“We were so outplayed in the first period,” Jamestown coach Brad Schaack said. “Then, they started getting penalties. We started getting a little momentum. … The ice was tilted, then it tilted our way.”
Amber Schaack was the catalyst, scoring a hat trick in the second period and adding a fourth goal in the third, which came on the power play. Ally Dion, Brenna Pritchert and Torri Kamlitz earned second-period assists.
The four scores gave Schaack 32 goals on the season.
“Since the turn of the new year, she’s taken it to a different level,” Brad Schaack said of his daughter, Amber. “She’s taken it on her shoulders. I’ve never seen Amber do this so consistently, and we’re playing good teams right now.”
Elly Millender had the deciding goal in the third period on the power play, with an assist going to Schaack.
Carissa Finck had 27 saves between the pipes in the win. Jamestown visits Mandan on Tuesday.
