Mustangs, Cardinals win region dual titles

Carrington and South Border won their respective region dual championships on Saturday.

Carrington avenged a regular-season loss to Central Cass by beating the Squirrels 36-33 for the Region 2 title in Mayville.

Walker Carr (132), Seth Zink (170) both had pins, but the Cardinals’ third pin mattered the most, as defending state heavyweight champion Cordell Schroeder used just 27 seconds to pin Central Cass’ Kyle Ueland for a dramatic 33-30 victory.

Chaz Bauer (126), Patrick Freeman (138) and Austin Schuldheisz (195) each came away with major decisions.

Carrington will take the No. 1 seed into the Class B state dual tournament, set for Feb. 14 at the Fargodome.

In Region 1 action, South Border dispatched of Lisbon 42-22 behind pins from Tyler Toepke-Floyd (106), Blake Bosch (132), Tucker Meidinger (160), Trevor Meidinger (170) and Tanner Meidinger (195).

The win makes the Mustangs a No. 1 seed. The top two teams from each region make the tournament.

Lisbon followed the loss with a challenge match, as third place can challenge the runner-up if the two teams haven’t faced.

Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock took advantage, securing its spot at state with a 40-32 victory. LHMB’s Andrew Leier clinched it with his team up by just two points when he pinned Lisbon’s Dalton Reinke in the second period.

In other dual action, Minot Ryan beat Stanley-Powers Lake-Tioga-Ray 34-31 to win the Region 3 dual tournament on Leighton Nichols’ 13-6 decision of Jaden Iverson.

Region 4 does not have a dual tournament and qualifies its teams by regular-season finish. Hettinger is the No. 1 seed while Beulah-Hazen is No. 2.
