CARRINGTON — Carrington’s plan to slow down North Star’s high-powered offense appeared to work in the first half.
But the seventh-ranked Cardinals couldn’t convert, either, and No. 2 North Star went to work in the second half en route to a 60-40 win in Class B basketball action Saturday in Carrington.
“Our defense was clicking really well in the first half; I was very pleased with that,” Carrington coach Matt Hone said. “We weren’t so happy with the offense. The offense was kind of stagnant. We weren’t moving real well, weren’t passing real well, weren’t getting the points we needed.”
All-state point guard Jacob Hagler led five players in double figures with 16 points as the Bearcats improved to 15-1, at the same time dropping Carrington to 14-3.
“Everybody talks about me and Daniel,” Hagler said of his all-state backcourt partner Daniel Grande. “(But) all five guys have contributed all year. They do the little things that don’t always show up in the scoring column, getting the big rebounds and hitting open shots when they can.”
North Star led 25-13 at halftime, not bad for Carrington’s defense considering the Bearcats have scored no less than 70 in each of their last seven games, including four games with more than 85 points.
“They made us play defense a long time and we got tired it seemed like,” Hagler said. “We’re a team that wants to get it and go. We’re not typically a half-court (team). They got us into a half-court game and that kept it low scoring.”
It was the third lowest total for North Star this season. Only Dupree, S.D. (58) and Rugby (59) have done better.
“Overall, I thought it was a fairly good job against their offense,” Hone said. “You’re talking about a team that likes to score 70, 80, 90 points a game.”
But the Bearcats shot 56 percent (13-of-23) in the second half and 46 percent for the game. They didn’t get a single point from their bench, but all five starters had at least one 3-pointer including three from Kvilvang.
“When you drive and you see a wide-open guy and he has a wide-open shot, you know it’s going down with this team,” said Hagler, who led an offense that committed only three turnovers. “Probably even with the (2010-2011) state championship team, we didn’t have all five guys that could go out and knock down a 3-pointer like this year.”
Oddly enough, Carrington didn’t get a point from its bench, either. Seth Abaurrea and Austin Johnson both had 11 in the loss. Hone said his squad needs to keep grinding with the postseason not far away.
“We’ve got to keep that intensity up,” Hone said. “We (need to) keep that working and get back to like we were early in the season when our defense was creating turnovers and turning it into offense.”
