Blue Jay seniors finish strong in pool

The three Blue Jay senior swimmers went out on a high note.

Grant Curtis did so uniquely.

Curtis, normally one of the Jays’ top swimmers, took to the diving board for his last meet. His six-dive total (105.10) was only 25 points from “state” consideration.

“It was a nice meet. The seniors, they’ve done a nice job all season, and they did tonight, too,” said JHS coach Ben Smith.

The Blue Jays hosted Fargo South for the first time this season and Moorhead for the first time ever.

Smith swam with Moorhead’s coach in college, who swam for South’s coach in high school. Marney Shirley, the longtime JHS coach was an official, adding to the reunion feel.

“It was fun to have everybody back together,” Smith said.

The Bruins’ total of 470 was the highest. Jamestown’s 399 followed.

Hunter Boehm won the 50 free in his final home meet in a time of 24.39.

The team’s other senior, Brandon Hart, was less than one tenth of a second from qualifying in the 50 (26.02). He also had PR in the 100 (59.36).

Smith’s team added another unique feature to the meet as four team members swam in three straight events, while Braydon Love went iron man and swam in four straight — the 200 free relay, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay. Love was second in the breaststroke (1:16.91).

Colt Rasmussen, Cayden Hare and Andy Oslund each churned out three straight races.

Rasmussen’s 1:58.36 was good for second in the 200 free.

Oslund earned runner-up honors in the 100 free (51.74). Hare had a pair of sixths in the 200 free and 200 IM.

“It was just to learn to swim tired and push past the mental barrier of being tired,” Smith said. “Normally we space them out, but those guys all did a nice job. They worked hard.”

The divers performed well, too.

Riley Thom (347.50), Ian Eastham (276.60) and Cody Lutman (262.05) went 2-3-4.

“We had a lot of improvement, and we had fun. … It was a good meet,” Smith said.

The Blue Jays have a little down time before their final regular season action Feb. 15 at Fargo North.
