Some days, the shots just don't drop.
Those days are few and far between for the 13th-ranked Jimmie women, but Wednesday night was one of those nights.
Jamestown College, which entered the game 21-4 and averaging just a shade under 80 points per contest, were held 30 points under its average in a 54-48 loss to rival Valley City State at the Civic Center.
There was no way to spin this one, the Jimmies were just off.
"I hope to never see anything like that again," JC coach Greg Ulland said. "It was brutal."
The Jimmies took 67 shots in the game and made only 16. The second half was especially painful, as they connected on just five of their 33 attempts.
"They're good defensively, we know that, so give them credit, but we shot 15 percent in the second half," said a perplexed Ulland. "I don't really know what to say. ... That's hard to do."
It was a stark turnaround from just seven days earlier when the Jimmies scored 47 first-half points in the Bubble in Valley City en route to an 81-64 win.
"We just competed a lot better," said VCSU coach Jill DeVries. "We were so disappointed with how we played (last game). We were basically never in that game, so it was important for us to come out and put up a fight."
The Jimmies started strong, taking an 18-6 lead on two straight Morgan Mathison 3-pointers. Amazingly, though, over the next 32 minutes the Jimmies scored just 30 more points.
"We had a great crowd and we laid an egg for the second straight (home) game," Ulland said. "The girls are disappointed, I'm disappointed. I guess we just turn the page, but it's hard to do."
The Jimmies' comfortable win over the Vikings in Valley City was the exception to the rule between the rivals. Normally, games are tight.
"This is what these games are usually like. You don't expect a blowout like they did to us last week, so it was important for us to respond in a positive way," DeVries said. "Defensively, we did a nice job. They're hard to defend, but we did a lot better job cutting off the gap and contesting shots."
Despite the woeful shooting, Carly Jensen's 3-pointer with 1:49 tied it at 48-48, but the Jimmies did not score again and four clutch free throws by Courtney Titus iced it.
Alyssa Hummel (16) and Brittany Lehner (12) were the only two scorers in double figures in the game. The two VCSU posts led a quick 8-0 start to the second half.
Hannah Steele's nine points and five assists led the Jimmies, who went 1 of 14 on 3s in the second half.
